Museum Computer Network 2005 Annual Meeting

Boston, November 2-5, 2005
http://www.mcn.edu/Mcn2005/mcn2005index.htm

Session: Interoperable Audio Information Systems: Cell phones and VXML
Moderator: Scott Sayre, Sandbox Studios Inc.
Panelists: Robin Dowden, Walker Art Center; Nate Schroeder, Walker Art Center

The Walker Art Center's Art on Call "AOC" program demonstrates a new model for the museum audio progamming. Using VoiceXML "VXML", an Interactive Voice Response "IVR" system, Walker resources (archived and scripted audio segments and XML event information), and the museum visitor's cell phone, AOC provides internal and external, 24/7 access to a wide range dynamically updated museum information.

This panel will provide an overview of the design, development, implementation and on-going testing of this new type of system. Panelists will discuss the pros and cons of such a system, opportunities for visitor personalization and data collection, and the dynamic integration of content management resources. The Walker's Art on Call research project was funded in part by an IMLS National Leadership Grant.
